Gary E. Linck, 82, of Mascoutah, Illinois, born September 19, 1943, in Belleville, Illinois, passed away Thursday, October 9, 2025, at St. Elizabeth’s Hospital in O’Fallon, Illinois.
Gary lived a life marked by quiet service, sharp wit, and a warm sense of humor that those who knew him will never forget. A proud graduate of Mascoutah High School, he was the first in his family to attend college, earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from Southern Illinois University Edwardsville and a master’s degree in Social Work from Washington University in St. Louis.
He devoted his career to helping others as a social worker with the Illinois Department of Children and Family Services, dedicating decades to supporting children and families in need. Colleagues admired his calm under pressure, practical wisdom, and ability to find humor even in hard moments. After retiring from DCFS, he worked at the Mascoutah Bus Garage, where his quick sarcasm and easygoing nature made him a favorite among coworkers and friends.
Gary was baptized and confirmed at St. John United Church of Christ in Mascoutah. He was a proud veteran of the United States Marine Corps Reserve and a member of the Speedy Check Coffee Club, where mornings often began with spirited conversation and good-natured teasing.
A lifelong collector of pot-bellied stoves, Gary loved the search for unique pieces of craftsmanship and history. What began as a casual interest became a borderline obsession that reflected his appreciation for things built to last. His garage and workshop became part museum, where friends would stop to talk, laugh, and admire his growing collection.
He found joy in simple things - telling stories, traveling from auction to auction, and spending time with those he loved. His family will remember his one-liners, steady presence, and the kind of quiet support that made everyone feel at ease. He will be deeply missed.
Gary was preceded in death by his parents, Earl G. and Unetta A. (née Walting) Linck. He is survived by his three children, Scott (Sara) Linck of O’Fallon, IL; Jennifer (Adam) Hoock of Freeburg, IL; and Bryan (fiancée Holly) Linck of St. Louis, MO; and by his five grandchildren—Robert, Ryan, and Alice Linck, and Vivian and Hudson Hoock. He is also survived by his loyal dog, Addie Mae.
