Mark Larson Harter passed peacefully on May 5, 2026, leaving behind a legacy of compassion, adventure, humor, and deep love for family and friends. In his 43 years, Mark lived fully and intentionally, embracing each moment with warmth, curiosity, and generosity.
Mark was a devoted and loving husband to Jen and a proud and doting father to Eleanor, who brought immeasurable joy to his life. He was a cherished son of Gary Harter and Nancy Larson and stepson of William O’Hara. A dear brother and proud uncle, Mark was deeply loved by his in-laws, Mike and Sue Nubbymyer, and greatly respected by his brother-in-law, Kevin (Shelby) Nubbymyer.
He will also be lovingly remembered by his step-siblings, Shannon, Michelle, and James and their families; David Day; Patrick (Jennifer) Day; Scott (Lisa) Harter; Matt (Kristin) Harter; cousins Kent, Kay, Jan, Marjorie, Matt, Greg, Ryan, and Kristin and their families; along with many dear friends whose lives were enriched by knowing him.
He was preceded in death by his father, Gary R. Harter; grandparents Dr. William R. Larson and Dr. Dorothy Lill Larson, and Harold and J. Harter; aunt Jane Larson; and cousin Alex Larson Day.
After attending the Barnes-Jewish College of Nursing and earning his nurse practitioner degree from SIU Edwardsville, Mark dedicated his career to caring for others. Working primarily in telemetry at Memorial Hospital Belleville, he became known for his calm presence, friendly disposition, and ability to put both patients and coworkers at ease. His kindness, empathy, and steady demeanor made a lasting impact on colleagues, patients, and families alike.
Mark possessed an adventurous spirit and a love of exploration. Traveling the world with family and friends brought him immense joy, whether climbing Colorado fourteeners, hiking the Grand Canyon, or exploring destinations from Thailand and Ecuador to Germany and Istanbul. He embraced every culture through its food and especially enjoyed bold, spicy dishes wherever he traveled. Germany held a special place in his heart, though the salty air of the Bosphorus Strait and the döner kebab shops of Istanbul remained close favorites.
More than anything, Mark believed in making the most of every day. He opened his home to both two-legged and four-legged family and friends in need, always offering kindness, shelter, laughter, and support. He nurtured lifelong friendships and loved bringing people together, creating gatherings filled with connection and joy.
A proud member of the community, Mark especially treasured the Mascoutah Homecoming and Augustfest celebrations and parade traditions. He was a lifelong fan of Indiana Hoosiers basketball, an Eagle Scout, a marathon runner, and a musician who played with the Teflon Dons band.
Though his passing leaves an immeasurable void, Mark’s adventurous heart, compassion, humor, and genuine love for others will continue to live on through the countless people he touched.
Memorial donations may be made to the family and will be used toward the purchase of a picnic table or bench in Scheve Park, where his beloved Eleanor loves to play.
FUNERAL: A celebration of life will be held at a later date.
